Appearance: Valdemar is a tall, handsome young man. His shield bears a wolf, both to honor Hinotheus and to honor his time guarding his family.
  Demeanor: Valdemar is an open, friendly man. His long time on the road has left him with a broad knowledge of people and cultures and he strives to respect and adopt local traditions when in different locals. He fights with a determines but not rash style, though when he isn't fighting he can rush into new projects, especially if it rouses his curiosity. 

BackgroundEdit

Valdemar was born the youngest of three brothers to Victor and Kataria Brokveld. Victor and Kataria where traveling merchants, taking their wagons up and down the Landadel Baronies and even into the Great Delta at times. Valdemar therefore, didn't grow up in one place, unless you counted the back of a wagon. Luckily Valdemar had his parent's love of travel (not that he knew any different) and was affable and made friends easily. As he grew it became obvious that his older brother Vanemar had his parent's knack for selling and trading. His middle brother Varismar always had his nose in a book, and eventually he left to apprentice to a wizard somewhere out east. Valdemar seemed to always bounce around. He would help sell things, he asked his brother if he could read his books, he help his father fix the carts, and his mother as she took care of the animals. He seemed to pick up bits and pieces of information here and there.

But as he got older he gravitated towards his uncle Nikomari. Niko was the head of the guard detail for the caravan, hiring local men, guards for longer trips, and securing the caravan in towns and on the road. For what ever reason Valdemar was drawn to that side of the trade. It was probably during a trip in the Delta when a group of merrow attacked the caravan. Valdemar was about 13 and had been walking beside the wagons, looking at all the surroundings when the merrow erupted from the water. Valdemar ran back to his wagon, and he would not have made it except that his uncle ran past him, skewering the ogre with his spear. The spear went through the merrow and pinned him to the wagon. Niko tossed Valdemar a sword and nodded to the ogre as he ran off to deal with the rest of the merrow. Valdemar held the sword and looked the the merrow as it thrashed in pain. Valdemar was afraid naturally and wasn't sure why his uncle has had him the sword and not just finished the job himself. But his choice was made for him as the ogre broke the spear shaft and pulled itself off the wagon and charged him. Valdemar had had some lessons on weapons like his brothers, so he knew how to use a sword, but had never HAD to use it. Some thing awoke in him then and there though. He did not thrown down his weapon and run, or dither over how. He shifted his grip into two hands, sidestepped the merrow and brought the sword down onto its neck as it tripped past him. And that was it, when Uncle Nike returned he saw the broken spear and the decapitated ogre and read what had happened. "You fight well Valdi. Maybe you should come by the guards fire when you want. You like to learn things yes? You have a natural swing and grip. The sword would do well in your hand." It was an easy decision, Valdemar no longer wanted to have to run. He would fight.

And so Valdemar's training began. He started as a simple guardsman, moving out of the wagons to his mother's sorrow, and camping with the other guards. He learned everything he could, every weapon, tactic, he always had a question. And as he grew older it was clear he would not be as strong as his uncle, but he was quicker and fought in a measured style, and soon he could out-spar and outlast all but the toughest and oldest guards, along with his uncle. Despite his mother's worry, Valdemar seldom got hurt guarding the wagons. He was sharp and kept his weapons as sharp. But he did not let his profession make his dour like his uncle, he was still a gregarious young man, who loved to figured things out, and would stop and ask anyone how something was done. He had made friends all up and down the Baronies, simply by asking people what they did and talking to them.

At some point though, the life of a caravan guard gets dull for a young man with an itch to make his mark on the world. He was a competent guard and knew he could get a job if he needed to. But something he did not entirely understand was calling to him. He traveled the open road already, it wasn't wanderlust. It was something more. So he packed his bag, bid farewell to his parents and headed down the road. He had heard that the Dunn Wright Inn was a meeting place where folks who went out on adventures met. So he turned his feet towards the inn and destiny.
